Audience & Representations in our film
PARMINDER MATHARU
Our film, SCREW'd is mainly aimed towards a teenage audience, which is aimed towards a 16- 25 age group. In terms of rating, our film would be rated a 15 cetificate, as the film revolves around the theme of pregnancy, therefore, our film would contain sexual references and would have sexual gratifications, includes strong language and would arouse voyeuristic pleasures . It would be pointless to rate the film as being a 12 certificate, as it does not focus on our main target audience of 16 -25 year olds, as our film might be dealing with issues, such as pregnancy more light heartedly but with strong language and explicit scenes, with which parents of younger children might object to.
SCREW'd is mainly aimed towards a teenage audience comprising of mostly females, as they can identify with the main protagonist, Jenny. However, our film will appeal to males, as our film features male characters, which they can identify with, such as Zach.
As well as appealing to this primary, teenage, 16-25 audience, we figured we could also appeal to more than the 16-25 audience, as our film fixates around an ethnic family, including the mother Baljot, therefore, an older audience could identify with her, as she represents a typical Indian mother, in terms of attitude and persona, and is truly signified, as being strict and traditional, as well as being a comical character, which could evoke hysteria from the audience, due to her accent. In addition, our film will aim to captivate older audiences, as it follows a complex narrative, which includes humour, suspense, tensions and seriousness.
SCREW'd would appeal to a D and E socio economic group, as this group includes teenagers and ,semi skilled, skilled workers, therefore the film would appeal to them, as they can identify with the plot, characters and narrative. As our film could be shown in multiplex cinemas, these socio economic group could be our main target audience, as they might understand the plot better, whereas, other A, B, C1 socio economic groups might tend to watch more thought provoking art house films, which sadly, our film is not.
In terms of psychographics, our film would mostly appeal to reformers, strugglers and aspirers, as our film gives a liberal, enlightening look at teenage pregnancy in the Asian community. SCREW'd could challenge the iconic American representations of teenage pregnancy, as depicted in films such as Juno and could give a raw portrayal of how teen pregnancy is dealt with in traditional, cultural ethnic communities.
