Analysis of Production Logos and music in comedy trailers

The main Fox Searchlight Pictures production logo appears at a zoom earlier in the trailer and last for about 2 seconds. Within our trailer, we could have the production logo coning at a zoom or the typography could be arriving in a linear way, as is justified within this trailer. The sound bridge of the flute plays throughout the beginning of the trailer, we managed to achieve this in our trailer, with the rock music. The transition from the instrumental to the jazz music is exemplary in our trailer, as there is a constant change in music from rock to more or an indie type of music.

The use of the titles seem to be iconic of comedy trailers and last for roughly 1-2 seconds, we managed to incorporate this in our trailer, but we could stretch out some of the important tiles, as we have included a voice over, which doesn't require any titles.

Generally, in comedy trailers, the need for TIMING is crucial, as it generates more laughs from the audience. Also, the change in music is vital as funny sound effects also manage to create humour from the audience. Within the Whip it trailer, when Drew Barrymore says "We need a mascot " is an example of a dialogue which is intended to leave the audience guessing and also generates humour, as the appearance of the protagonist is one to be laughed at. Like the rock skaters, the audience can identify with them and laugh at the protagonist, who is clearly trying to 'fit in with the crowd'.

Within this trailer the production logo comes at the end of the trailer, which is common in most trailers, therefore, we could incorporate our production log at the end of the trailer. Typically, the music shifts, which also seems to change the mood of the audience, as the rock must in his trailer is a sign of hope, as the main protagonist becomes more confident.

Finally, the main film title is arranged at the end of the trailer, which is typical of teen comedy films, as they are seemingly irrelevant to the audience's focus. I have noticed that the logo arrives with its own sound effect, which manages to give it more of a focus, this particular convention is seen throughout most Hollywood films, and is definitely one convention which we have included in our trailer.

Similarly, the other information such as the coming soon logo and the directors and cast members information is also necessary. Particularly in our trailer, we have focused on the cast members information and the Coming Soon to a degree of detail and have positioned it an place which is typical in most teen comedy trailers.

Progress Report

This week we managed to just go over our footage and just give it the last few amendments before finishing. Fuad imported some music at the start of the trailer which intended to give it a more realistic and humorous feeling. We also managed to trim some scenes and brightened up a few scenes which needed to be adjusted. For our production logo I came up with the idea of having ECLIPSE ENTERTAINMENT as another title, as comedy trailers tend to have other production titles, such as Fox or Lionsgate which distribute the film. However the name could be changed to something better, which we need to think about. On the whole, our trailer is now at the more intentional 2:12 minutes stage, which is a plus. However, I feel we could have had the mother's scene, but we had trouble finding a location which was disappointing.

In terms of my print production, I pretty much have finished. After amending some errors, I proofread the print and printed it out on gloss paper and gave it a professional look. Though there were some printing errors such as margins which have been corrected.

Action Plan

For the week that we come back, we intend to film one voice over and just finish certain details which need to be finished. We also need to adjust the audio in certain places and tinker around with the brightness in certain scenes.

In regards to my print production, I need to correct any outstanding mistakes and focus on amending some printing errors.

Production logo

Guys, this was one of the production logos which we came up with. I dont know if we will have it in our trailer, but we designed it any way.

PARMINDER MATHARU

Progress Report

This week, we managed to adjust some of our footage within the timeline. We managed to film the voice over, by choosing Rajneet. We incorporated this into our trailer and also managed re film the scene where Zack where she knows Jenny is pregnant. As well as this, we decided to change the Prime Times Production logo to a more comical looking font, as it would suit the genre of our film and is similarly used in Hollywood trailers such as Superbad. Most importantly, we successfully trimmed the footage by 5 seconds to get it to 2:15 seconds which was what we intended to have. On the whole, I would say that our trailer is more or less complete, we only have to adjust certain areas such as audio gain, increase certain shots such as the house scene, change the logos on the coming soon title and other small details to refine the trailer. Also, we need to change some of the dialogue of the voice over. We must also render the footage .

In terms of my print production, I completed the first drafts of both Esquire and Empire magazine features. I changed the fonts from a size 11 to 10 , as it looked more professional. Both of the magazine features were reviewed by Mr Bush. From his feedback, I have to amend minor details such as punctuation, spaces, certain font sizes, such as in the Screwed feature and Esquire magazine. As well as this, I have to change the font on the second page of the Screwed article, as it looked quite tacky and unrealistic.

Action Plan

For next week, we intend to have captured and implemented the refined section of the voice over and the details that needed to be completed such as the audio gain, some scenes being elongated and making adjustments to the trailer. We also need to render the footage and save it on a hard drive

Perosnally, for my print production, I need to edit the Screwed feature by removing the end dadhed words and changing the size of the font on the second page of the article. Also, I need to change the font size of the captions. For my Esquire feature, I need to change the end dashed words and works on the punctuation and spacing. Most importantly, I need to just proofread both of the features and correct any faults. Apart from this, I pretty much have completed the features, thoughI need to print them out in a final glossy format.

PARMINDER MATHARU

Progress Report

This week we managed to edit the footage and decreased the timing by 20 seconds, though we do need to review the footage and cut it down to by 15 seconds to reach the allocated 2:10 seconds, as stated in the brief. On a positive note, we added typography such as the institutional logo, the coming soon logo and the title logo. Interestingly, we created the title logo ' SCREWED' and thought of a catchy pun ' No lubrication needed', which was humorous indeed. Also, we managed to import various sound effects to go alongside the title logo. Finally, we managed to get our last scene of Ms Dixon completed, when she says ' Next'. Though the next did get cut off when we captured it on the timeline, but we managed to edit the previous sound and shot the dialogue again and meticulously fitted it alongside that scenes in the timeline.

Personally, I bought the copy of Cosmo magazine, but I chose not to use it, as the article was not suited for the interview, so I opted to go for Esquire,as the Leonardo Di Caprio interview was best suited for the second feature. Furthermore, I started on the copy of the feature and gave an overview of Monica, as exemplified in the Di Caprio feature. Also, I managed to write the copy of Monica and her life in the movies. In terms of imaged, I photographed the lead actress and used a sepia effect, as suggested by Mr Bush, to create a legendary effect, similar to Leonardo Di Caprio in the Esquire feature. In order to create a Hollywood effect, I photographed Monica lying on a chair, to add to the glamour, which is typical in magazines such as Esquire.

Action Plan

For next week, we need to record the crucial voice over for trailer, as it is iconic in teen comedy films. Collectively, we suggested Rajneet should do the voice over, as she is best suited, as she has the voice required for the trailer. Most importantly, we need to trim the shots to reach the 2:10 seconds, we should consider positioning the shots in order to get the' laughs' form the audience. We need to find the sound effect for when Monica gets pregnant, something funny or possibly dramatic???

In terms of my second feature for the magazine, I need to finish off the copy within the features and just finish of the pictures in order for them to look more professional and have a sepia effect.

Progress Report and Action Plan - Fuad

Progress Report
Basically now, we have officailly completed all filming.

In terms if Editing, our challenge was to, cut 35 seconds of footage, but we were only able to cut only 20 seconds, so we have 15 seconds left. So our aim for the following days is to cut certain shots and make them shorter, if that doesnt work, then I'm afraid we'll have to cut a whole scene from our trailer.

The film trailer name has been designed, imported and edited into our trailer, with sound effects.

Action Plan

I need to find a sound effect for the scene where monica finds out she is pregnant.

RECORD VOICE OVER !

Fuad'S UPDATE

Well, basically, our production is come along very well actually, the songs and order of everything has been put in place. A lot of editing has been put in and the music boosted the quality of our trailer.

NEXT STEPS
>>>> I need to import sounds that will be put in between song changes, to back a trailer flow better

>>>> Film the last bit of filming! with Ms Dixon in the hall on Tuesday 22nd March

>>>> CUT 35seconds worth of footage from a trailer for it to be 2minutes 10 seconds

>>>> Write and Record Voice-over for the trailer, so people understand our trailer

Progress Report

Well, this week we managed to edit our footage to a very productive standard I may say. We managed to import songs such as My Humps and managed to organise the positioning and timing of the scenes that we needed. Whats more, we successfully managed to create the PRIME TIMES PRODUCTION logo , as well as the SCREWED logo using a typical high school font. In addition, I managed to create some typography of a extracted quote from a magazine, which is a typical convention of teen comedy trailers. Hopefully, we should be able to film the remaining scenes such as Monica's mum's scene and Ms Dixon's scene . Also, we managed to trim the scenes and import five songs, which need to be positioned and edited.Personally, I managed to complete the first draft of the EMPIRE two page feature, which is of a n interview with Monica. However, I still need to change the background, although the text and images and captions are justified and suitable. Furthermore, I really need to buy a Cosmopolitan magazine for the next feature of an interview about Monica's life in the movies.

Action Plan

For next week, we need to have positioned the five songs within the trailer and edited the middle of the trailer and improved the lighting in some of the scenes. Furthermore, we need to capture Ms Dixon's and Monica's mum's scenes in the trailer, so that we can edit other parts to meet time constraints with the brief. Most importantly, our footage is at 3:00 minutes, so we need to cut it down to the 2:00 minute stage which is mandatory in the exam brief. In terms of the print production, I need to buy a Cosmopolitan magazine and choose relevant fonts and images for the interview with the lead character. Also, I need to continue editing and add more typography in the trailer, which will make it look more authentic.

Progress Report- Fuad Ashor

Okay this week has been quite good actually we completed most of the things we had to do and now is just about making a trailer flow nicely WITH THE MUSIC FLOWING NICELY TOO.
Also I kinde put the footage on the timeline in order and next to each and its 3 mintes long, we have to cut 1 minute of footage which will be tragic for me.

We have to more scenes to film and this FILMING IS FINISHED
One with Miss Dixon and the other with Monica and her mum

POSSIBLE TITLE LOGOS FOR OUR TRAILER

PARMINDER MATHARU

This logo could be chnaged in terms of colour and form. Guys, this font- Jersey Letters is suitable for our trailer, as it relates to the stereotypical genre of teen comedy

This logo is ALLSTARS and could be included within our trail and for other simialr typography within the trailer

We could opt to use this font- Varsity for the trailer, however we could alter the thickness of the line and decide on which particlar solid colour to choose.

i think this was the best week in terms of team work and getting the work done. it's a shame we have not gelled together, but i have personally managed to see the benefits when we do work together. this week more editing was done, filming was done, and each one of us has more or less started our second magazine feature.

my self and fuad have stayed numerous times during lunch and after school to film and edit. i fully understand if other subjects take priority, but just the little message of letting each other know were they are- would drastically improve our pace. also, parminder you have stated that we have not yet made the 'primetime logo's'- please do help us and actually asks what needs doing, as fuad has made them and i have imported them in the sequences.

action plan

firstly, we need to get all the little shots done. these are minor shots although will enhance our production drastically.

secondly, we should finish editing in the next week or so- this will included a TEAM EFFORT

lastly, we should each finish our draft, and attempt to progress with our second magazine feature.

PARMINDER MATHARU

Progress Report

This week, we managed to achieve quite a lot. In terms of shooting, we allocated certain shots whilst editing and managed to re shoot the 3 bitches scene, including Anaam, Rosie and Chandni. Also, we progressed in terms of editing, as we captured the footage from the re shot scenes and other scenes such as Zack's audition and managed to film other scenes such as Rajneet's scenes, Monica coming off the train and Monica crossing the zebra crossing frantically. Similarly, we managed to shoot the classroom scene and similar scenes. Also, I managed to get sounds and songs for the trailer which were suitable. In addition, we created some institutional information for the trailer.Personally, I managed to start my print production using the EMPIRE magazine features as a template. Effectively, I managed to extract film stills from the trailer and started on the copy of the magazine, as my double page spread is based around an interview with Monica, who plays Jenny.

Action Plan

For next week, as a group we intend to resume editing by sorting out what more sounds we need, such as sound effects. Also, need to create the Prime Times Production institutional logo and title logo. Furthermore, we need to complete filming ASAP, so that we can spend time editing.Hopefully, we should have the Ting Tings song available to add in our timeline within the trailer, as it did not play. We should aim to complete 3 scenes a day or more if we do have time. Personally, I need to complete the print production first draft by finishing the copy and deciding on backgrounds and taking photographs of the lead actress. The magazine should look authentic, so I will decide where to arrange photos. Most importantly, I need to find a double page spread on a comedy film, as the template and designs will come of use to me.

FUAD'S UPDATE

Filming has been neither here nor there, but things are moving on slowly and we're getting some filming done, we have about 30% of filming done, which is unfortunatly the most important scenes of the whole trialer.

We will be filming all this week from March 8th to March 13th.

Then by March 16th we will be hopefully be editing for 3 weeks without worrying about filming...hopefully!

PARMINDER MATHARU

Progress Report

This week we managed to capture all of our footage from both of the tapes onto Adobe Premiere. In addition to this, we managed to log some of the footage from the first tape and began to decide what scenes to capture and which were deemed suitable. On a positive note, we decided to re shoot the scene with the three girls outside the E block, as the previous scene had poor lighting and the sound was muffled. We also managed to film additional scenes such as the office scene with Sheila and the scene with Kashif and Monica. We startder editing the footage, which we need to complete. This week has been partly productive, as we captured all the footage and began re shooting scenes and shooting other scnes that we needed.

Action Plan

For the following few days and next week, we need to urgently complete the rest of the logging of the tapes, so that we can resume shooting the remainder of the scenes or re shoot some scenes such as Ms Dixons' scene if necessary. Also, we need to film more scenes outside of school, such as in Monica's house or Rajneet's house, for the scene with her mother.

Collectively, we need to gather music and sounds for the editing of our film trailer, so that we can decide what music is best suited and where the music needs to be sorted. Similarly, we should consider the title logos and institutional logo, as well as the film's caption, which could be a pun.

In regards to print production, I need to extract some film stills from our footage, such as the still with mica walking away from Rosie and Sanjay, the office scene and other stills for the magazine double page feature. As well as this, I need to take photos of cast members such as the protagonist, the helper, the geek, the jock and other characters in a variety of poses.

PARMINDER MATHARU

Progress Report

This week we managed to film a number of scenes including the gym scene with Zack and Chris. We managed to film the scene where Jenny trips up Ms Charles, which was one of the funnier scenes. Also, we filmed the library scene with Jenny and Ally (Jason) who is the stereotypical nerd. This scene went well, as the cast members were present and we filmed straight away. In addition, we filmed the classroom scene, where Jenny arrives late with Zack. We managed to get Ms Khadum to play the strict teacher; the background sound effects were effective such as the whistling and facial expressions of the other students, which created that teen comedy feeling and is iconic of the school setting. Most importantly, we successfully started to capture our footage and began editing on Adobe Premiere.

Action Plan

We still to re shoot a few scenes such as the library scene,t the scene in the music room and maybe the scene with Ms Dixon, due to poor lighting. However, we intend to start filming the remaining scenes such as scenes with Jenny and the other protagonists in school. Guys, we need to collect the post production stuff such as the sounds and typography needs to be found, for the institutional logo and title of the production. Most importantly, we should have logged all of our scenes, so that we can just film and then capture the relevant scenes and edit it using fades, wipes and other post production stuff. We should be finished filming by the end of this week , so that we can slowly edit our footage. I reckon we should film quickly as a group and finsih filming ASAP, as time is of the essence and so that we can start our magazine articles. Finally, we should arrange a photo shoot including the main protagonist Jenny and other characters such as Ally, Zack, Chris and others. Also, I will take photos whilst we are shooting, so that I can choose them for the magazine article.

Here are some of our photos when we were filming the gym scenes:

Action Plan and Progress Report 15/2/2010-21/2/2010

Sorry for the late update guys, I 've been working on trailer analysis and other things for the production

PARMINDER MATHARU

Progress Report

During the half term, we managed to shoot the scene in the train, where Jenny falls asleep on a stranger's shoulder. We managed to re shoot the scene until it was finalised and deemed effective. For this scene I had to wear a suit, as I was an extra in the scene. This particular scene was productive, as it looked quite funny. We also managed to record in Holland Park, as we needed the exterior long shot of the house in order for us to cross cut to the interior of another house for the scene where Jenny is talking to her mother. In addition, we managed to film the scenes in the house party, where Jenny meets Zack and is socialising.

Action Plan

For the forthcoming week, we intend to shoot 11 scenes which are still outstanding. We need to shoot the class room scenes with Mr Blake and the music teachers. Also,we need to have a few school children as extras, as this is the scene where Jenny realises that missing a period means that she is pregnant. Also, the scene with Ms Charles needs to be captured, as well as the scene in the gym between Zack (Rajneet) and Chris (Raheam) needs to be shot, as Chris realises that Jenny is pregnant. The scenes in Mr Bush's office and the library scene need to be shot. Most importantly, guys, we need to focus on possible straplines for the film trailer and work on logos for the film such as the institutional logo 'Prime time productions' and the title logo. We need to ask permission to use the class rooms and reach a compromise with the teachers to film at a suitable time.

Wednesday 24 February 2010

Test Screening Feedback

Sorry for posting up the test screening late guys... but I have finally done it.

For our test screening of our scenes for our film, we managed to get mostly B's and a few A's and C grades for media language, conventions , creativity, attention to detail and technical proficiency

Positive comments on cinematography

Surprisingly, we were commended for our use of the tracking shot, as we used our own additional equipment in the form of a tracking dolly and used it professionally in terms of movement. Similarly, the use of panning was good in our screening, as were signified the protagonist and other characters well. Also, our shots were well placed, as the characters were positioned accordingly.

Positive comments on mise en scene

For our screening, our locations were well chosen , as they were typical of the teen comedy genre such as the school, the school hall. Also, the use of props such as the cushion showed the clumsiness of the girl which was comical. The use of clothing were well suited to the genre, as the clothes were casual and typical of what teenagers wear.

Positive comments on lighting

The use of the lighting behind the characters as defined by the tracking shot in the school hall, which was was effective, as it gave an outlined effect of the characters showing their importance. The use of stage lighting was effective, as it related to the genre of teen comedy, as it takes place in school, and auditions are featured in teen comedies. The use of filler light and high key lighting was used well, as the natural light added to the humorous effect.

Positive comments on sound

The use of diegetic music was effective, as the use of the parallel sound of the Black Eyed Peas seemed to add comedy, as Zack was trying her best for the audition, but seems to mess up. The use of dialogue was clear in the scenes, as the characters could be heard and the use of the tone by the protagonist, Jenny added to the comical effect which related to teen comedy.

Positive comments on conventions which match the audience

The use of characters such as the teenage female protagonist, the jock, the geek and other characters are stereotypical of the teen comedy genre, as a female audience could identify with the protagonist, as she is in a school setting and is typical of what a teenager would do in school. Positively, the locations used seem to match the audience, as it is typical of where a teen comedy would be situated, as the audience could identify with certain characters.

Criticisms on the cinematography

Within the test screeing, the framing needed to be improved, as the characters were not wholly included in the frame and the use of shots medium shots and long shots could have been improved. Also, the tracking shot was seen to be too close to the subjects, for example, when the characters are in the auditions and are lined up. We could resolve these problems by arranging the frames , so that the subject is included fully when filming long shots. Also, we could film the tracking shot and long shot from a distance in order to avoid being too close, as the protagonist and other characters need to be included, as they are needed in the scene. The close up shot of the dance scene was filmed from a high angle which was not effective, as the characters such as Zack were not included fully in the frame. Also, the camera movement was too shaky when we used the tracking shots, close ups and long shots which resulted in poor framing. We could avoid this problem by keeping the camera steady and keeping the tracking dolly stable by using some sort of weight and suporting the tripod on the dolly better.

Criticism of the mise en scene

When we were filming the characters' reactions to the auditions, the shots of the rows of chairs could be angled so that the first few rows of chairs could be included as it would be similar to a scene from a teen comedy film. Similarly, we could have used more props, as teen comedy films typically have gags, jokes and certain props which are like action codes , which could create humour. Also, we could have the characters dressed in brighter clothing, which could be iconic of the teen comedy genre, as they are more bright which connotes happiness and humour.

Criticism of lighting

The use of lighting was poorly lit in places, for example Ms Dixon, as she could be light more brightly, so that she could be influential, as her reaction is important when the other charcters realise their result from the audition. We could improve and re shoot this scen, so that more high key lighting could be focused on Ms Dixon and other charcters in scenes. We could use external lighting in the scenes, so that the high key lighting on the charcters is included

Criticism of sound

For our film, we could use an external mic and other songs for certain scenes, as the sound was muffled and unclear at times. By using the microphone, we could achieve better sound, as the dialogue could be more clear, as we could position the microphone nearer to the characters in order to hear the dialogue . Furthermore, the feedback given in terms of the sound were to add more dialogue, as they was a limited amount. By having dialogue, the audience could have negotiated readings with what our film is about and be entertained with the use of humour and sounds. In some of the scenes there was too much background noise which was interfering with our scenes, therefore, we could use the external mic to capture dialogue whilst limiting other noise.

Criticisms of conventions? Are they matching the audience?

From the feedback from the screening, more brighter clothing was needed, as it is a convention of the teen comedy genre and is iconic with humour, as the charcters can have visual gags in the form of clothing and could genreate humour, as their clothing and style could be comical, for example the nerd, who would steretypically wear glasses and have his shirt tucked into his trousers. Alos, the humour could be exaggerated more, by having more gags and dialogue which generates humour.

What else would you(or the target audience) like to see in this production?

Within our production, we were suggested to include more comedy elements, as our scenes had a limited amount of humour. We could approach this , by including more props, action codes which would result in humour, clothing and other related elements. From the feedback, we were advised to vary the pace in the trailer, by focusing on humorous scenes and balancing it out with serious scenes. The target audience would like to see scenes which are shot from different angles and include high key lighting and filler light, as it could look effective and seem like a teen comedy genre film trailer. Also, the brighter clothing was suggested, as it looks effective, as the characters would look hilarious and generate humour.

Suggestions for post productions/editing(music? voice over?cutaways?montage?cross cutting?titles?slo-mo?

In regards to post production, we could add comic looking fonts such as the title for our production, as comedy movies tend to be more light hearted and comical. We could add contrapuntal sound over the scenes, as teen comedy trailers seem to use this. In addition , we could add a variety of soundtracks which could be light hearted, as the film is meant to entertain the audience through humour, visual gags, props, clothing, characters and other factors. In some ways, we could add a voice over, as teen comedy trailers such as Juno use a voiceover to recount their experience. In our production, the voiceover could be the protagonist, as the audience could identify with her , as she is retelling her experiience, which would be typical of what a teenager would do. We could vary the pace in the trailer, as the shots could condensed or be slithgly longer. In addition, we could emphasise the comedy scenes suchas the train scene and audition. We could use software such as Adobe Photoshop and related programmes to create the typhography using comic fonts and use the prgramms to create the institutional logo and title logo in a comical font

Yesterday, we did scene 11 in the Libray however due to not using the Mic (which we hardly do as sometimes it is not needed), we will therefore re-shoot this today, with scene 12 at Mr. Bush's office.
Yesterday I succesfully filmed scene 28 at Mr.Bush's office.

Today we will film scene 8 with Rajneet and Monica.

Progress Report - Fuad Ashor

Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th filming went quite good actually, I believe we're going on the right track (get the pun... my actually track) and we got some decent amount of footage.

I tried to follow my filming schedule that I did however, due to working around when teachers and cast are free it meant that we swapped around some scene for the available members of our cast.

The lighting devices in the Hall helped a lot with a number of scenes.

1. i have done all the sounds needed nd recorded them on the camera.

Progress Report- Fuad

Lat week Thursday and Friday we began filming, it was very hectic, but we got some filming done.

We had a bit of problems wih the sound as there was a lot of background noise, but we figured that uf some held the mic, near the actors/actresses (out of shot), it wasnt that bad.

I made a Filming/Shooting Schedule for Monday 8th- Fridsay 12th, as we will be filming something everyday in school.

PARMINDER MATHARU

Progress Report

This week has been totally frantic for me and the group, as we started rehearsing and filming the school scenes on Thursday, instead of Monday. We planned to film 8 scenes on Thursday and Friday, but we didn't get around to it, as some of the cast members were unavailable and weather problems and lighting were factors. Due to the gloomy weather, we had to start late, as we needed a sunny, bright weather as our film trailer is based around teen comedy. However, we managed to shoot two scenes in the D block and outside the C block today which was a plus.

Action Plan

We need to try and shoot the scenes outside of school such as in Jenny's house and locations such as the train station etc. We will try to shoot more scenes, as we hardly managed to do much this week.
