Low Budget Film Analysis- Teen Comedies

SUPERBAD (2007)

Seth (Jonah Hill) , Evan( Michael Cera) and Fogell (Christopher Mintz- Plasse) are three teenage guys who love to drink and desperately wish to get laid. When a girl that Seth really likes, asks him to get the drink for her party, he sees this as a perfect opportunity to make her his girlfriend. The trio plan out how to get the alcohol, even including Fogell's new fake ID, but things won't got smoothly for the trio. Seth and Evan become separated from Fogell (now called McLovin) and they still haven't got the alcohol for the party that night.

This particular film cost $20 million and is one of the successful low budget films of 2009. Distributed by Columbia Pictures, the film has direct appeal to the main teenage audience, through its witty humour, slapstick, toilet humour and gags and crude jokes; all of which culminate into a successful teen comedy.

In conjuction with our production, Superbad seems to be iconic of the teen comedy genre, as it's use of jokes, crude humour and slapstick make it popular with the teen audience. The film relates to our production in that , the characters seem to be enjoying life at its fullest; the main protagonists enjoy getting drunk sensless and are on the prowl for hot girls, which is similar to our film, as Jenny enjoys patrying around and meeting guys, regardless of the long term effects.

KNOCKED UP (2007)

Knocked Up follows the life of the lead female protagonist , Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl) , who is promoted to an on air role at E! Entertainment Television. While celebrating her promotion, Alison meets Ben (Seth Rogen) at a local night club. After a night of drinking, they end up having sex. Due to a misunderstanding, they do not use protection: Alison uses the phrase "just do it already" to encourage Ben to put the condom faster, which he misinterprets as "forget the condom". The following morning, they quickly learn over breakfast that they have little in common and go their separate ways which leaves Ben visibly defeated when she walks away. However, Alison realises eight weeks later, that she is pregnant!! She calls Ben and they decide to try to stay together and have the baby. However, Ben needs to grow-up first to raise a family of his own. Alison's mother (Joanna Kerns) tries to convince her daughter to have an abortion, but Alison decides to keep the child. Later, Alison and Ben decide to give their relationship a chance.

Knocked Up which is directed and produced by Judd Apatow is distributed by Universal Pictures, which is owned by Viacom. Surprisingly, the film cost $33 million, which makes it an average low budget film. In general, the film shows the conventions of comedy; through its sexual gratifications, toilet humour , slapstick, gags and captivating plot of unexpected teen pregnancy and comedy. As well as this, the film intends to appeal to its audience by showing the serious sides of teen pregnancy, which the audience may find engaging, in comparison to other comedies which vividly manage to show the typical teenage lifestyle.

Knocked Up relates to our film, as we intended to show how teen pregnancy is presented in our film, similar to Knocked up. Knocked up 's use of gags, toilet humour, sexual references, slapstick, sarcasm and irony can be incorporated within our film.Effectively, this would then appeal to our main 16-25 audience and older audiences, who would find the balance of seriousness and comedy more entertaining, as adults could also identify with the characters and plot. Generally, low budget films such as Knocked up use artificial lighting and ordinary settings, like schools, parks, houses and other locations, therefore, we could use these factors in our film.
